“Wais si Canis”: Celebrating Small Wins in Educating Smallhold Pig Farmers

“Pinanganak ata talaga ako para sa pagsasaka”
, Canis stated.
A 4H Club Member in Magdalena, Laguna pursues integrated farming as a living. At an early age, Canis sees agriculture as a very interesting practice. This led him on taking agri-related courses and venture on agri-business.
Louie Gene D. Gadayan, popularly known as Canis enjoys the beauty of farming in a 3000 sq.m land. “Dito na talaga ako sa farm nakatira, para mas matutukan ko itong farm”
, he shared. Consuming less time of going back and forth to his backyard farm, Canis decided of staying full-time in a small agri-business he started in 2021.
Canis is one of the Center’s alumni in the Practical Course on Pig Husbandry and Course on Swine Artificial Insemination in 2019. At that time, he was a fresh graduate of Agriculture in Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) and the President of the Head, Heart, Hands, and Health (4H) Club of Magdalena.
Even before going to ITCPH, Canis has always been handy to local farmers. Upon completing the training at the Center, he became more useful in the lives of many. His 5-week stay at ITCPH together with the other 4H Club members molded him to be a better farmer.
Prior to the pandemic, a total of seven 4H members and private individuals received one native piglet from him as paiwi. Aside from continuing his “Paiwi sa Barangay” project, he provides free technical assistance on sow and piglet management, and other best practices he acquired during the training.
Sharing knowledge and skills is not new to Canis. He has been teaching farmers and livestock raisers for many years ago. Participating in the Center’s course offerings provided him with more opportunities on improving their production capacity as smallhold farmers.
“Naituturo ko sa kanila kung kailan ba talaga dapat masumpitan ang isang dumalaga, yung estrus cycle ng mga inahin, at yung tamang pag ta-transport ng semilya ng baboy”
, he narrated. Aside from educating farmers, Canis also serves as an on-call livestock technician on swine artificial insemination. According to him, around 5-6 clients are facilitated monthly, giving him additional source of income.
Today, friends, private individuals, and students come to El Canis Farm to learn integrated farming. Visitors enjoy harvesting seasonal crops while understanding animal production on cattle, horses, goats, rabbits, poultry, ducks, and native pigs. Canis has also started to cook local dishes that are served during the farm visit.
“Hindi pa ganoong ka developed itong farm, pero tinatahak ko na yung gusto kong business, na may bisita, may pagkain”
, he added. Among his clients feedback include appreciation on managing an integrated farm flourish in a minimal size of land and sustaining Canis’ daily life.
Though Canis was not able to grow white pigs yet, his dedication and passion for helping the farming households in Barangay Balanac served as a role model to his co-4H club members. Many are privileged to learn and earn from pig raising but not everyone is capable of extending hands to the needy.
As a training center that specializes in pig husbandry, one of its functions is molding private individuals to be confident in sharing the best practices in swine.
Canis is optimistic about the promotion of farm tourism while ensuring that the smallhold pork producers in his area receive the same knowledge and skills he acquired at ITCPH.
