Homebound Success: A Former OFW Turned Farm Owner

Mr. Jed B. Valencia is a graduate of BS Industrial Technology Major in Instrumentation and Control Technology from the University in Batangas, Batangas City, and a resident of Poblacion, Balete, Batangas. He used to work abroad from 2011-2019, where building tanks for the refinery and
mining industry in a foreign country is his daily grind. Mr. Valencia started with a 120-Sow Level Swine Farm located in Brgy. Malagonlong, Lipa City, Batangas. Currently, the facility can house up to 250 sows with 5 caretakers. When he had his firstborn, his wife encouraged him to take over the family’s pig business. As a former OFW, he wants to be with his family then. He took the risk in the field of agriculture which he was clueless about, neither related to his professional experiences. He then decided to undergo formal training in pig husbandry.
In February 2020, Mr. Valencia took his first training (face-to-face), the Basic Course on Pig Husbandry. This was followed by an online course on Artificial Insemination. He enjoyed his experiences during training. Besides the technical knowledge he equipped, he gained a lot of friends through his classmates and instructors. Management of sows was one of the subjects that Mr. Valencia focused on. This is for the reason that his business follows a farrow-to-finish operation. Through these learning experiences, he became a regular client of the Center’s AI Business Center.
When African Swine Fever (ASF) breaks out, a total of 587 heads on his farm tested positive. These included sows, weaners and finishers. “Malaki ang naging epekto nito sa akin at sa buong pamilya, halos 14-15 million ang nawala sa amin ng dahil sa ASF. Dumating din ung oras na gusto ko ng tumigil, pero naisip ko, hindi naman doon lang tumitigil ang mundo, kailangan ko lang mag-pursigi ulit.”
Mr. Valencia recalled, that during his training on Basic Course on Pig Husbandry, Introduction to Artificial Insemination was discussed. Gaining interest on swine artificial insemination, Mr. Valencia acquired 3 boars. He asked for the assistance of the ATI-ITCPH through Dr. Ruth S. Miclat-Sonaco and endorsed him to Mr. Francisco Ramos, a boar expert. Mr. Ramos taught him the technique of training boars, the process of semen collection, evaluation, and AI via video call. Though in person training was far better than online learning, ASF and CoVid-19 transmission pose a big danger for both.
"Kapag gusto mo talaga, matututo ka"
, Mr. Valencia shares.
As to biosecurity practices, his farm implements a strict biosecurity protocol. He moved the market area from his farm by a considerable distance, elevated fences, facilitated frequent disinfection, built a shower room, provided quarters for the caretakers, and a lot more.
"Nagtraining ako, kase ang gusto ko mas marami akong alam para hindi nila ako madiktahan"
This is one of the reasons why Mr. Jed Valencia attended courses in ATIITCPH, that is, to acquire first-hand knowledge and skills from credible experts in swine, making him confident as one of the key players in the industry.
