Widner’s Will in Pig Farming

A Veterinarian in Sumilao, Bukidnon preferred to be a swine practitioner right after college. “Kahit na niyayaya ako ng Tatay ko na mag poultry, hindi ko talaga feel, baboy talaga yung gusto ko”
, he narrates. He first engaged himself as a hands on pig farmer and entrepreneur rather than any other veterinary careers.
Known as Doc Phil by his ITCPH co-trainees, Dr. Widner Phil S. Tapdasan, was able to continue his veterinary medicine profession through a small veterinary clinic for pets. Technically capable of running a business, an agri-vet supply was also established at that time where he was able to provide extension services to farmer clients. With two agri-businesses in place, Widner also manages a 10-sow level backyard pig production owned by his father, and another 3-sow of his own which gradually increased by time. Thankful enough to the financial and moral support of his family, Widner decided to go into teaching.
While keeping the business, he simultaneously spent two years in Central Mindanao University (CMU) as a VetMed instructor.
Being an instructor in a university paved the way for Widner to participate in the National Trainer’s Course on Pig Husbandry of the ITCPH. "Striking kasi yung international training center tapos dito lang matatagpuan sa Pilipinas, then yung cost ng training, napakababa, at wala kang mahahanap na ganon"
, Dr. Widner added.
Overjoyed with the training he received from the Center, he was very idealistic upon his return in the academe. Few months later, he was appointed as the Swine Farm Manager of the University. “Bata pa ako for that position, ginawa akong Manager, kasi the University President at that time wanted a Veterinarian to handle the farm”
, he shared.
Confident enough, Widner took the challenge of handling the Swine Project as part of the Income Generating Project (IGP) of the university. Prior to the arrival of stocks in partnership with a private company, he tried to make sure the facility is in conformance with the learnings he acquired at the Center.
However, when the 50-sow level farm started its operation Widner had to leave his teaching career.
Having an existing agribusiness, selling of finishers was a smooth sailing income for his family until the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) reached Mindanao. Discouraged to keep the production, his father decided to stop his pig production including Widner as they separately own sows in one farm though management is just one. While waiting to sell the remaining sows at the farm, three sows unexpectedly returned to heat. Fortunately, this helped Widner continue the operation, until he added replacement gilts.
Dr. Widner is a hands-on farm owner and a businessman. Venturing into pig farming financially assisted Widner to expand his other business. Currently, he is maintaining a 10-sow level farrow-to-finish production and happily applies the knowledge and skills he acquired from his trainings at ITCPH. One of his best practices is optimizing locally available materials in achieving proper pig nutrition of hogs without spending much through the use of fermented plant juice, fermented fruit juice, and lactic acid bacteria serum (probiotics). “Meron kasi kaming rice and corn mill, so yung rice and corn bran, hinahaluan namin yan ng probiotics at concoctions”
, shares Widner. This technology was adapted from the Sustainable Pig Farming Course he also took from ITCPH.
"Dati limited lang talaga ang alam ko sa practical activities sa baboy, pero noong nag training ako sa ITCPH, technically and practically natulungan talaga ako"
said Dr. Widner. Even during his teaching years in the academe, Widner was very transparent on how he was able to improve his lessons and technical discussions. “Practical approach yung talaga nakatulong sa akin, kasi iba yung nagtuturo ka pero binasa mo lang”
, he added.
Also, prior to his resignation in the university, his proposed project in ITCPH the Project KASTA – Knowledge Advancement in Swine Technical Aptitude was approved as an extension project of their college by the university and became the project head. The said project aims to equip backyard pig farmers with knowledge and skills in pig farming in the municipality of Maramag.
"Though I was not able to be part of the implementation, I am still very happy kasi from that time until now, present pa rin yung Project KASTA with a lot of graduates already"
he shared.
The said project was successfully implemented through CMU, a private company, and ATI-RTC 10. With the presence of ASF in the country, Widner is keeping his backyard farm through the basic biosecurity measures. For the meantime, he also manages to provide technical assistance to backyard farms through phone calls.
"Talagang napu-put into practice ko talaga, at sa ITCPH ko nakuha yung practical and highly technical knowledge and practices sa swine management and medicine na mai-aapply ko sa day-to-day activities with confidence. Hindi lang ako ang nakaka benefit pero pati na rin yung ibang farmers"
he stated.
