Preparing the Next Gen from Decades of Pig Farming

“Tiyaga-tiyaga lang, hindi araw-araw ay fiesta”
, says Mr. Cayo De Villa Casanova, a pig producer for more than forty years.
Like most hog farmers, Ka Cayo has been raised by his parents with pig farming as their main source of income. Farming seemed to be an interesting hobby for Ka Cayo for him to take Bachelor of Science in Agriculture majoring in Animal Science.
Since then, and even after college, Ka Cayo was determined to run his own business. He started a ‘boar for hire’ service in the 1980’s and eventually led him to expanding the venture. “Mga after two years, yan nagdagdag na ako ng mga inahin, backyard farm lang”
, he narrates.
Able to earn a living for more than a decade from a pig business, it was in 1995 when Mr. Cayo Casanova started to participate in the course offerings of the ITCPH. Among the trainings he completed are the Course on Artificial Insemiantion, Intensive Course on Pig Husbandry, Feedmilling and the Basic Meat Processing.
“Siguro if hindi ako nakapag-training, hindi magiging ganito kaganda ang farm”
, Ka Cayo shared.
With his past experieces when he was still a kid, and gained knowledge and skills during college, and actual experiences in running a business, it is with no doubt that Ka Cayo can definitely make a long way.
Prior to the pandemic in 2020, he was able to maintain a 300-sow level semi-commercial farm in Poblacion 6, Calaca City, Batangas. Aside from a farrow-to-finish production, he also have a total of six boars for artificial insemination. “Bago ako mag training sa ITCPH, fresh boar semen yung binebenta ko for AI service”
, he stated.
Upon attending the AI course in ITCPH, Ka Cayo improved his AI business. Passionate of strengthening the needs and capability of his farm, he personally trained two of his staff in heat detection, semen collection, evaluation, processing, and artificial insemination.
From the usual and limited competence of his boar-for-hire and fresh boar semen in the early years of pig farming, Ka Cayo successfully sells a total of 300 vials of processed boar semen in a month.
“Natutunan ko rin sa ITCPH na dapat maganda ang kuhaning breeders, meron ako ngayong Duroc Pietrain, White Duroc, at Landrace x Largewhite”
, Ka Cayo added.
Molded through time, this hands-on farm owner receives positive feedback from clients, making his AI laboratory a busy place all year-round. Aside from merely selling boar semen, he also shows the quality of the semen through a miscroscope. Most of the customers come from Calaca City, Laurel, Balayan, and Nasugbu.
Besides trading live animals, cacassed and processed pork products hold a place in the market. “May panahon kasi dati na tumumal sa baboy, lumaki ang mga alaga kaya nasubukan na rin namin na mag-katay at mag-process”
, Ka Cayo shares.
Today, around 80-90 finishers are butchered monthly. While most are sold as fresh meat, some are processed into longganisa, tocino, tapa, barbeque, embutido, and shanghai.
“Mahilig din kasi akong magluto kaya naging madali yung pag-apply sa mga natutunan ko sa meat processing course ng ITCPH”
, he narrated.
Ka Cayo and his family are now enjoying the perks of their hard-labor in pig farming. Two years ago, Ka Cayo was challenged of marketing hogs during the pandemic and outbreak of african swine fever in the country.
Lucky to not have been infected with ASF, Ka Cayo continues to practice biosecutiy measures in his farm since the market area is located 4km away from the farm, animal caretakers are stay-in, and disinfection system is in place.
When asked on the secret of keeping the farm, despite other options for business, Ka Cayo smiled. His practical advice is to be a hands-on business owner, to attend trainings, and lastly to cull animals whenever necessary. “Hindi araw-araw fiesta, kaya kailangan talaga ng tiyaga”
, he stated.
With four decades of stability in farming, Ka Cayo wishes to pass the business to one of his family members, who recently joined one of the courses at ITCPH in November 2022.
Ka Cayo’s journey only proves that pig farming is a profitable business. His passion, patience, and dedication of growing rooted in many ways, such as passing the enterprise to the next generation of the family.
