Reap What You Sow Case 001: The Sorok Uni Foundation, Inc. Success Story

The Sorok Uni Foundation, Inc (SUFI) is a non-stock, non-profit organization established in 2022 that aims at providing a resettlement program to abandoned Filipino Cured Leprosy Patients (CLP) and their families. SUFI is related to the Samaria Mission International Inc (SMII) which has long been operating a “Philippine Rehabilitation Program for CLP” since 1996 up to now at the Samaria Village, Caloocan City, Manila. The foundation is one of the recipients of the Center’s Stables and Greens Project.
The Stables and Greens is a collaborative project of ATI-ITCPH, East-West Seeds Corporation, and other LGUs in support of DA's "Plant, Plant, Plant Program". In August 2022, the foundation became an official beneficiary of the program through a Memorandum of Agreement ceremony. Its partnership with Mocha Farm paved the way for SUFI to know about the program being offered by the Center. As part of the requirements, some of the members attended the 3-day Seminar on Vegetable and Free- Range Chicken Production in the Center.
In this project, ITCPH provides the initial financial support, stocks and housing, technical support, farm business advisories, and conducts monitoring activities. East-West Seeds Corporation, on the other hand, provides high-quality seeds, technical support, and assistance in setting up an ideal small-scale vegetable enterprise.
With 11 members, consisting of various clientele such as CLP and homeless people, they were able to establish a vegetable production site. They were able to apply the #LearningByDoing
teaching of ITCPH in crop planning, bed preparations, bed plots, seedling preparations, production, containers, and watering system.
"Nakikinabang ang buong community, not only the community kasi nakakapag-share po kami sa labas, at sa mga bisita"
, says Ms. Jonarace T. Lampa, Community Coordinator, SUFI.
In less than a year, they were able to harvest various crops such as long chili (siling haba), tomatoes, eggplants, string beans, lady fingers (okra),
snow cabbages (pechay), mustard greens (mustasa), bottle gourds (upo), cucumbers and silk squash (patola). Likewise, eggs are also produced.
These products are being sold to the neighboring community, residents, and members of the SUFI. Proceeds go directly to the foundation as its circulating fund. "Napakalaking tulong po ng ITCPH kasi nandoon yong nabigyan kami ng tulong sa pag-aalaga ng manok at mga pananim… napapakinabangan talaga at naibabahagi naming sa iba"
, added Ms. Marivic Tamayo, a member of SUFI.
With the future improvements raised, such as the fencing, water system, sustainable seeds, and vaccine for chicken, the Center remains committed to strengthening food security through community-based agri-livestock production that is climate change resilient.
