Reap What You Sow Case 002: The Manukan sa Baranggay at Gulayan sa Paaralan Success Story

This was the driving motivation of Ms. Milagros Virrey, a Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) parent leader in Dagatan, Lipa City, Batangas, which is one of the Community-Adapt beneficiaries of ATIITCPH through its Stables and Greens Project.
The Stables and Greens is a collaborative project of ATI-ITCPH, East-West Seeds Corporation, and other LGUs in support of DA's "Plant, Plant, Plant Program". In this project, ITCPH provides its qualified alumni the initial financial support, stocks, housing, technical support, and farm business advisories, and conducts monitoring activities. East-West Seeds Corporation, on the other hand, provides high-quality seeds, technical support, and assistance in setting up an ideal small-scale vegetable enterprise.
Starting in 2022, this Stables and Greens Project in Dagatan Lipa City served as a livelihood program for the 4Ps members of the community. After attending the 3-day Seminar on Vegetable and Free-Range Chicken Production in the Center, they applied for the program and become a beneficiary. While students are attending classes through online modality, they took advantage of the gulayan sa paaralan area as a vegetable production site. Through these, they were able to appreciate the value of crop production systems such as crop planning, bed preparations, bed plots, seedling preparations, production, containers, and watering system. Meanwhile, the manukan sa barangay served as a haven for free-range chicken production, where members had the opportunity to raise, produce eggs and grow chicken.
kanila”
, say Ms. Milagros Virrey.
As classes returned to face-to-face setup, the gulayan sa paaralan project was turned over to Mr. Patroneil G. Fadriguela, the Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) Coordinator of Dagatan Elementary School. Together with his colleagues, Sir Jerome, Mam Cristy, Sir Ivan, and Mam Noemi, they were able to maintain and sustain the project as part of their curriculum, where students took a hands-on involvement. Over the years, these students were able to grow crops such as talong, okra, ampalaya, kamatis, lettuce, pipino, pechay, mustasa, labanos, kangkong, and malunggay. These are being sold to students, teachers, and people in the community. As such, its profit becomes part of the school’s revolving fund in addressing EPP-related concerns.
, says Mr. Fadriguela.
With these initiatives of empowering farmers toward productivity and profitability, ITCPH was able to emphasize the important role of community development through crops and poultry production in securing a sustainable source of living for their families, school, and communities.
