Academic Pursuits of a Scholar

“Hindi madali magturo pero inembrace ko at minahal ko kasi gusto ko makatulong at mashare yung knowledge na natutunan ko”
– Sir Ar-Ar.
A young man in Nueva Ecija made his way to proper education upon receiving several scholarships from government institutions. Clear with his intention of bringing a brighter life for his family, Mr. Arnold V. Damaso took the chance of going to college.
He completed a bachelor's degree in agriculture majoring in crop science through the help of the Agricultural Training Institute in Region I. Gaining the momentum of learning, he then received another scholarship from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for a 2-year course on agricultural technology. Decided of achieving greater heights, he proudly became one of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholars for his Master in Crop Science at the Central Luzon State University (CLSU).
Returning the favor of being a scholar, Sir Ar-Ar is required to work for the government for a minimum number of years. More than making his parents proud, Sir Ar-Ar earned the position of Dean in the College of Agriculture, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology.
Before becoming a Dean, he took advantage of participating in online trainings conducted by the ITCPH during the pandemic. He successfully attended the Courses on Meat Processing, Swine Artificial Insemination, Pig Farming as an Enterprise, and Pork to Fork: Multiplying Business Opportunities. As an instructor, he is a firm believer that knowledge is of no value if not put into practice.
Taking four courses virtually in 2021 made him realize that he needed to step foot at ITCPH. “Pag online kasi more on theory, demonstrations, hands-on and experience lacking”
, he shared. However, he was still able to cascade gained knowledge in the subjects he handle such as swine production, small and large ruminants, and agricultural economics and marketing.
With lesser restrictions in 2022, Sir Ar-Ar finally had the chance to be part of an in-person training. “May idea na ako about probiotics pero yung buo na kaalaman about LABS, dun ko talaga natutunan”
, he narrated.
Part of the Sustainable Pig Farming – Lactic Acid Bacteria Serum (SPFLABS) Course is to produce a liquid culture of specific beneficial microorganisms that can provide amazing benefits to crops and animal production when incorporated in the feeds, drinking water or as part of the medication of the animals.
Such came in handy when an International Forum in August 2022 was held in Indonesia, where Sir Ari-Ar served as one of the distinguished speakers about the production of probiotics in livestock. Through the University, Sir Ar-Ar shared how LABS can help prevent foot and mouth disease outbreaks in swine and cattle. Around 40 Indonesian farmers attended the said forum.
Sir Ar-Ar first entered the ITCPH when he was still a Research and Extension Coordinator at the University. It was also this time that he encouraged displaced farmers in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija to lessen the use of commercial inputs in planting crops. A total of 12 crops and livestock farmers use LABS in maintaining their production in Brgy. Bagting.
As a crop science graduate, Sir Ar-Ar was honest that he had a very little understanding about swine. “Siguro around 80% ng alam ko sa pagbababuyan ay galing sa ITCPH”
, he said.
Besides trainings, forums, and extension projects, the Dean was successful in having the production of LABS be an integral part of the laboratory activities of students. “Some of our students ay nagamit na rin itong LABS sa kanilang mga thesis”
, Sir Ar-Ar stated.
Committed to providing excellence in the college he serves, Dean Arnold is optimistic that more students will enroll in agriculture-related degrees as he did.
