No Hustle! It will Happen…

Right things come at the right time! Our hobbies when spiced with the right knowledge, wrapped with kindness results to a tremendous gift of success. Success which is better, one that is helpful. One that is contagious.
Four years ago, an animal keeper from the Province of Batanes took a course at the International Training Center of Pig Husbandry. Aside from being a good provider to his family, he is well-rounded with livestock animals. He is currently employed at the Provincial Veterinary Office in Batanes and mainly involved in Swine Artificial Insemination.
Back in 2014, Mr. Roldan E. Cabizon popularly called as “Dan”
took one of the courses in the Center which has few man takers. “Dalawa lang kami na lalaki nuon, pero na enjoy ko kasi interesado ako”
, says Sir Dan.
It was the National Meat Processing Course
offered once a year in ITCPH. Sir Dan loves cooking but he never realized that processing meat can be learnt from being a government employee. He went to Lipa Batangas with zero knowledge on this. According to him, no time was wasted, in fact, he went back bag full of knowledge. His drive to share what has been learnt was given a chance to be funded.
It was 2016 when he conducted three (3) meat processing courses in Basco, Sabtang and Department of Science and Technology (DOST). A total of fifty teachers, members of varied associations and housewives attended the training. It was conducted to maximize the skills of the participants on meat processing, possible job opportunities and augment their income. Some of the participants extended their gratitude and signified their commitment to share these within their community.
However, sited in the green pasture of Batanes in the northern most part of the Philippines gave the beneficiaries of the training a hard time to continue what has been started. Lack of capital, present work and supply of ingredients became a problem.
Sir Dan’s first try to help failed. Cost of living in Batanes is considered low and simple. Common for both men and women, is to have two to three jobs a day. Some fish, some assist in driving boats, others drive tricycles, while most of the time, they are seen as friendly tourist guides.
Goods and other materials are also imported from other parts of the country since Batanes is an island. Having this, “paunahan system”
is famous in order to build one’s market.
With his determination and strong will, Dan never realized that he would succeed in marketing his processed meat. At present, he is known for his jumbo pork “longganisa”
which he supplies to three hotels. “Ngayon lang din nahihilig ang mga tao sa processed food dito”
, adds Sir Dan.
After work, an average of 100 packs of “longganisa” are delivered by riding a tricycle. Thrice a week, he goes outside and sells his products. This was how he started. Longganisa, tocino
and bacon
are among his best sellers.
At present, he has an on-going construction of meat laboratory in Brgy. Kayhubucan in Basco. More than this, he is able to give his sister-in-law a monthly salary. She was one of the reasons for whatever success he has achieved today.
“Nagsimula ako ulet kase mayroon akong hipag na bagong dating sa Batanes, tapos kailangan niya ng mapagkakakitaan kaya kinuha ko siyang assistant – taga mix at balot”
, Dan narrates. It was right timing. His hipag needed a job and Dan became her answered prayer.
Things went smoothly from consistent delivery of ingredients from Manila. He started with a working capital of P6,000.00 and delivered to compensate his family needs and his hipag’s living. With one meat grinder, an old freezer from his previous ice cream business, slicer which he borrows and little by little purchase of utensils, he maintained a business. It has been a year since Dan started to operate his meat processing business. His passion to help has earned him more than what he earns.
Sir Dan is looked-up by many as a competent livestock technician, government employee, an entrepreneur and a husband.
It was right timing, that worked out for all…
