Buhay Probinsya: Isang Manileño

It’s fast. It’s ever changing. It obtains more speed as it goes by. It leaves many behind. It stresses mankind. The world circles around battling for it. Time… People should manage to run time. But often, time runs people.
At a young age, Bob has preferred to live in the province. “Ang dali lang ng buhay sa probinsya”
, says Bob. Mr. Roberta Gualta known as ‘Bob’ by many, spent 10 years in the city. Digital marketing has been his field of specialization.
Bob’s joy of being in the province was not brought by any of his savings from his previous work. He learned to be inclined with agriculture particularly in livestock since his childhood. He had more time devoted to raising animals when he resigned from employment.
His only background on piggery was plain observations when his parents used to have a small-hold farm. He maintains a 3-sow level farm in a 300 sq. m. lot. He also manages to keep twenty-five ducks and one hectare land planted with palay.
Settling in Brgy. Cabilauan in New Lucena, Iloilo, ‘you-tube’ became his best friend in learning. This was where he found ITCPH. “Meron akong nakitang video ng baboy na may logo ng ITCPH”
, Bob narrates. From this, he started to research about the Center.
No time was wasted. He called the Center and reserved for the Basic Meat Processing Course in 2016. While still in Batangas, he exploited another two courses such as Sustainable Pig Farming and On-farm Production of Beneficial Microorganisms. From this, the use of lactic acid bacterium serum (LABS) was put into use. He also grows different forages to feed his animals.
Today, Bob practices record keeping and analysis. He keeps tract of his farm targets as he already have the plan to transform another vacant land into a learning site. “ITCPH talaga yung nagpabago ng practices ko at nag grow sakin as a pig farmer”
, Bob shares. He became confident to answer queries in social media whenever clarifications are raised by other pig farmers. He even advertise ITCPH to them for trainings.
Currently, he owns F1 sows and operates a farrow-to-finish production. There was also his down moments such as high mortality and failure on artificial insemination. These did not put Bob into hesitation. He is determined to grow more pigs. He uses ‘ipa’ as beddings and tries natural breeding, as sourcing of extended boar semen remains a problem in his area.
Being a pig farmer, Bob eventually had his first car. “Nung nasa Maynila ako, hindi ako naka-ipon para makabili ng sasakyan, pero nung nakabenta ako ng mga finishers, ayun na”
, Bob happily describes. Proof, that in farming, there is really money.
It was also determination and good practices that pushed Bob. For him, it is beneficial to seek what one’s heart desires. For now, and believed to be for long, it is agriculture. It is farming. It is pigging.
“Mabilis lahat sa Maynila, dito mabagal lang pero kumikita”
, Bob states as he ends his story.
