Young Bloods

Talent and love for something often runs in a bloodline. Sadly, when it comes to farming, only a few continue to become successors.
“Ayokong maranasan ng anak ko ang hirap sa pagsasaka”
, answers the pressing issue on agriculture. Past experiences of aging farmers pass this notion to their children, making them believe that, in agriculture, only hardships can be attained.
However, another story can be heard from the Region of Bicolanos, province of Masbate, Municipality of Mobo.
A happy family in the name of the Ramos’ proves the beauty and abundance of farming. Thirteen children were raised to be professionals. Their education was their parent’s fruit of labor from their main source of income, copra and the livestock. “Ito ang ikinabubuhay at nagpaaral sa amin”
, says Sir Derek.
Mr. Frederick Ramos, popularly known as Sir derek is a 32 year-old graduate of BS Agriculture major in Agricultural Education. Growing as a kid, he has seen how farming and raising animals can keep a big family a living and achieve dreams.
During high school, Sir Derek has already decided to become a farmer-teacher. He took agriculture as a major in his subject – Technology and Home Economics or THE. Today, he lives his dream as a farmer, teacher, husband and a father to a kid.
Sir Derek is into farrow-to-finish production in a backyard level. He keeps white and native breeds of pigs. He shares, raising hogs and his boar-for-hire business contributes 55% to their monthly expenses. Aside from which, he has fifty goats, a carabao, a cow, and a hundred free-ranged chickens which he uses for broiler and layer production. As a full-time teacher, his parents and Ate helps him maintain the business.
This Master Teacher II in Bagano Cristita Memorial Higshool is an NC II holder on agri-crops, poultry and chicken and swine production. He had his NC II certification on swine production last August 2018 after attending the National Trainor’s Course on Pig Husbandry at the International Training Center on Pig Husbandry (ITCPH) in Lipa, Batangas. When asked of his experience on taking the assessment, he shares “exciting kahit highly technical, nalagpasan naman dahil sa training ko sa ITCPH”
.
His latest promotion in Bagono Highschool was also brought by his training from ITCPH. “Kung saan maraming enrollees ng agriculture duon kami dinadala”
, he narrates. Lately, there has been a growing population of students taking agriculture courses.
Heading home to his province after the training, he implemented his action plan in Dimasalang Highschool, where he spent six years teaching. A K-12 Awareness Training on Swine Raising was conducted to three batches of students during their community immersion on pig production. Observed of having good results, student-beneficiaries of the project will be provided piglets from the Municipality of Dimasalang this year.
Besides his teaching profession and being a farmer, what makes Sir Derek an incredible model and successor of farming is being a 4-H Volunteer Leader. His weekends are spent on a half-day basis with members of the 4-H Club composed of 30 out-of-school youth and 30 youth-in-school.
A tandem with his sister, whom is the present 4-H President in Mobo, aims for the Gawad Saka 2020 Award. ITCPH provided three native pigs to Sir Derek in support to his ambition of helping the 4-H Club to grow and maintain a smallhold pig production. His knowledge and experiences from the training at ITCPH are shared to the youth during Saturdays and Sundays not to mention how he improved the curriculum at the schools he worked with.
Being an advocate of agricultural education and growth of the 4-H members, Sir Derek became a Regional TESDA Idol 2018 Awardee and was included in the Top 5 at a National level.
He is the only teacher with an NC II on swine production and the only member of the DepEd in Masbate that attended a training at ITCPH.
More than the certificates he has including those as a speaker to various trainings, seminars and symposium to farmers, youth and teachers, his advocacy on building the capacities of the youth stands high on a pole. May the flag of his career steadfast in the eyes and hearts of the youth.
Behind the success of these young blood pig farmers is a noble volunteer leader!
Mabuhay ka Sir Derek!
