The Roots for Research

“Puyat, laging nagmamadali, stress, financial constraints, pamilya”
, admits Doc Gen as she faced challenges in doing researches.
Well, these have something to say in research. Passing a thesis through research is the most critical stage in college for any student. But, it becomes harder after college. Be it during Masters, Doctoral degrees, or work. A sort of leveling up.
Most of Mrs. Genevieve Tabon’s researches was done during her early beginnings as a Mom. This was the time when her eyes bugs aren't made because of midnight studies alone. Baby cries and baby feeding was a top priority. During the day, she becomes a mother for the many.
Being a teacher has always been a dream for Gen. Molding her to become one was her experience in the Research Department for five years. “Ang maganda sa research you have a basis for everything,"
says Doc Gen. Her knowledge on explaining the variances in the results of feed conversion ratio, average daily gain, and other productive parameters is one of a kind. Confidence can be observed as she demonstrates technical know-how to students.
Gen started her career at her Alma matter. Benguet State University has experienced her downfalls and bright days. Finishing an Agriculture Course major in Animal Science, this lady turned to be a very inquisitive one in terms of crops and animals.
Part of the road where she is now is her experience in the International Training Center on Pig Husbandry in 2014. Four years later upon shifting from research to instruction, was knowing about ITCPH from her colleagues. Her training on Organic Agriculture for Livestock Technicians paved the way to do more learning.
“Dun ko kasi nalaman na hindi lang pala dapat alam mo lang yung anong pakain, but to know more ano ang epekto pag dinumi na ng hayop yung kinain nilang feeds?”
shares Doc Gen. According to her, the Course hit her. It was a turning point for her. Right after heading home, she began doing various researches. Most of her researches focus on animal feeding, the use of roughages, supplementary feeds, and many more. Not to mention, the awards, and recognitions she received from her hard-earned researches.
The same year, she became the Project Officer for the Cordillera Organic Agriculture Research and Development Council (COARDC). Managing to act as a researcher, teacher, wife, and mom, was her achievements mentioned above. Two years later, by being in love with trials and science, she smoothly passed certifications under TESDA. Doc Gen became an NC II holder of OA Production, Animal Production in Poultry, and Swine.
The fulfillment she gets from working at BSU is more than the certifications and success she conquered. “Nakakatuwa na nahahalata ko sa mga estudyante ko na naeencouarge sila pag may mga dinadagdag ako na info na wala sa libro”
says Gen. She further claims organic agriculture must be the primary course to be undertaken before any crops or animal production trainings. Doc Gen explains that it is a must for those in agriculture to be aware of how to mitigate greenhouse gasses by using proper management.
Greenhouse gasses are emissions from activities of people including agriculture. Too much of this may negatively affect animals, plants, and mankind if the natural system cannot cope with it. Practices in dietary manipulation of animal ration, application of manure additives, air filtration, manure cover, manure treatment, and building design can help reduce these gasses if proper management is applied.
The Organic Agriculture Course for Livestock Technicians is a one-week training at ITCPH that provides the risks on human, animal, and environmental exposure to toxic materials. Because of such, Gen got to enhance the syllabuses at BSU. Further, it helped her manage to do well in speakerships. She can lecture on swine, goat, free-range chicken, native chicken, and large ruminants.
“Natuto akong una sa BSU pero kung wala yung ITCPH kulang din”
ends Doc Gen.
This Doctor from Tabuk, Kalinga remains humble despite the achievements she has. May she continue to spread her roots and hold a tree for other’s successes.
