A Fulfilled Dream for My Hometown

“Sa amin kase hindi gaano karami ang nag-aalaga ng baboy”
, kaya naisipan ko itong gawin – Mr. Emmanuel Fuentes, 48.
Kuya Manny is an Oragon (from Bicol). Interested to upgrade and learn more on hog raising, he attended the Basic Course on Pig Husbandry and the Swine Artificial Insemination Course at ITCPH in 2016.
Upon knowing that with the right knowledge and skills on maintaining a good herd, one can make a good money, Kuya Manny invested on manpower. Trained a number of pig farmers not to work for him, but to start their own pig venture.
This time, it is no longer just for his family, but for the community he grew up with. Confident with the saying “may pera sa baboy”, he was able to establish a Cooperative at Barangay Siruma, Camarines Sur, Bicol. Aiming to boost the pig industry in Bicol, fishermen begun to add pig in the number of their produce. Currently, the said Cooperative has 45 members from his Barangay.
Encouraged thru Kuya Manny’s effort and jurisdiction to help, the group was able to push for another training provided by the Center. In 2017, technical staff from ITCPH visited and conducted a basic pig husbandry course with the members of the Cooperative. “At masaya ako na almost lahat ng members merong inaalagaang mga baboy mula sa aming kooperatiba”
adds Kuya Manny.
Some of the improvements seen in the locality is the use of nipple drinker, proper housing and ventilation and the practice of providing trichantera cuttings as snacks. “Napakalaki po sobra ng naitulong ng ITCPH”
relates Kuya Manny
“Ginaya namin yung pagtatanim ng maraming trichantera sa farm na napakalaki pala nang nabibigay na protina sa baboy”
he narrates. With the use of trichantera or madre de agua, it reduces feed cost by 15% as pigs grow faster with its protein content.
Aside from helping his locales, he serves as the President of the Cooperative and maintains good relationship with its members thru proper accommodation of technical queries and assistance. The Center was able to make him a better person not just for his own good, but for the community he serves.
More so, he manages a Meat Shop in Taguig Manila. Another source of value adding. In terms of the improvements made in the lives of pig farmers in barangay Siruma, Camarines Sur, Bicol, 100% of the members of the swine based cooperative were able to return the cost of gilts provided to them. Today, fishermen turned hog raisers are able to maintain a smallhold farm generating income for their family. Finishers produced from the 45 active members of the Cooperative are being sold in their own Coop.
“Kung dati na talagang isda lang ang pinagkukunan namin ng hanapbuhay saka kauntiang mga tanim, ngayon pati pag-aalaga ng baboy maalam na rin”
says one of the members.
Kuya Manny is a role model in building dreams.
Dreams that fulfill his heart but touches more hearts.
Today, Kuya Manny continues to grow what has been planted.
