ITCPH strengthens ties, NIU’s academic cooperation highlighted

In the quest for beneficial collaboration across South East Asian countries, Directors Dr. Ruth S. Miclat-Sonaco and Dr. Yeong Hsiang Cheng of the Agricultural Training Institute-International Training Center on Pig Husbandry (ATI-ITCPH) and Taiwan National ILan University’s Department of Biotechnology and Animal Science inked Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU underscored a recognized exchange program for internship and training purposes for three (3) years.
Realizing this, three (3) students of NIU’s Biotechnology and Animal Science programs arrived the Center for a month-long On-the-Job Training. Peter, Ji-rei and Kathy got exposed to practical activities and hands-on exercises on swine raising and management. Their farm experiences equipped them with necessary skills and knowledge on castration, Artificial Insemination (AI) procedures, piglet processing, and farrowing management among others.
“We really thank ATI-ITCPH for an open-handed opportunity to acquire the much needed training on swine production. In the farm, we do all activities that our teachers required us to do and those were significant for we were able to comprehend with important concepts and principles on pig raising especially that in Taiwan, one has to pay much to get same training that ATI-ITCPH provides.”
, shared Ji-rei. “Also crucial was the overwhelming treatment and willingness of its staff to assist us which made our stay one of a kind.”
, he added.
Also, their OJT program covered exposure trips focused on livestock production. Facilitated by the Center’s Partnership and Networking Services (PNS), they visited Rosario Dairy Raisers Association (RODRA) for its Carabao-based dairy enterprise, guessed in one of the satellite radio stations of 95.1 KISS FM and toured the facilities of Soro-Soro Development Cooperative (SIDC) in Batangas City. Eventually, they went to Philippine Carabao Center’s (PCC) National Headquarters and Central Luzon State University (CLSU) in Nueva Ecija. There, they got chance to visit the institutions’ facilities and laboratories say, Molecular Genetics Laboratory, Milka Krem, Science and Technology Centrum, Chives Café and Patisserie and tasted Tilapia ice cream among all other products offered to them.
Meanwhile, NIU Professors Yeong Hsiang Cheng, Ming Cheng Chen and Yu An Lin visited their students on July 21. They spearheaded the conduct of Seminar on Updates and Developments in Swine Reproductive Technology and Practical Course on Home-made Probiotics to farmers, farm owners and Center’s staff. As part of their itineraries, NIU professors and students called for an orientation meeting with the faculty and Dean of Southern Luzon State University’s (SLSU) College of Agriculture on July 23. Potential scholarship grant and research funding were the meeting’s focuses.
“We are really grateful that ATI-ITCPH provided our students more than what’s stated in the Understanding.”
, expressed Professor Cheng. Above all the relevant skills and knowledge, the OJTs enjoyed a few of Filipino’s culture and customs, say, adobo, balot, riding on a tricycle, some Tagalog words among others.
“Maraming salamat po!”
, ended Peter, Ji-rei and Kathy as their training finally completed. They moved back to Taiwan on August 4.
Concluded as a success, both parties hope that the ties would bring more fruitful outcomes and stronger mutual relationship in years ahead. That said, Dr. Sonaco and Dr. Cheng assured to provide the best of what their countries have in their future endeavors, even beyond what is agreed upon.
