Free-Ranging White Pigs in Botolan Zambales

“Pinapanuod ko lang ang ITCPH sa youtube, tapos nagustuhan ko kasi laymans term yung kanilang mga videos”
, says Lester.
According to the 26-year old Lester D. Pilar of Botolan, Zambales, during his research on how to grow pigs, the ITCPH appears in any subject he searches, so he began to watch technical videos uploaded on youtube.
Lester needed to take-over his grandpa’s boar-for-hire business in 2019. Lolo Luis’ boar-for-hire is well-known in their area since it has been in the swine industry for more than 50 years already. “Yung sa lolo ko talaga yung naging standard nila pagdating sa boar service, kaya kilala talaga siya dito sa amin”
, Lester stressed.
With zero knowledge on how to grow hogs, except cleaning dung, and feeding animals, Lester was determined to succeed in pig farming.
In 2019 he started to maintain three largewhite and landrace boars, a sow, and a few finishers. As a wide reader and committed to keeping his promise to his Lolo, Lester joined the Sustainable Pig Farming Course at the ITCPH. “Saktong-sakto na nung nag-tingin ako ng trainings, yung SPF yung akma sa schedule ko that time, at yun din yung gusto ko na gawin sa farm”
, Lester narrated. The said course involves sustainable and alternative ways of native pig production.
“Wala akong pambili ng kulungan at feeds kaya natural talaga yung gusto kong maging approach”
, adds Lester. In one hectare of land, partitions for gilts, sows, farrowing sows, piglets, and finishers can be seen. Animals are free-ranged and many nipa huts serve as shade.
“Binalik ko lang sa natural, kasi kaya pala ngumu-nguso yung baboy sa pader ng pen kasi behavior pala nila yun na nagdudukal bago sila manganak”
, shares Lester.
As an advocate of natural farming, he also invested his time in preparing a corn plantation to minimize feed cost. “Kung ano yung pinapakain ko sa baka at kambing, yun din ang pinapakain ko sa baboy”
, Lester added. He prepares silage using raw materials such as maize including its stems and leaves, napier grass, and kangkong. For maize, he shortens the harvest period from 120 to 60-90 days to get the required nutrients from the plant. As a practice, animals are fed twice a day.
After attending the SPF course, he knew that white molds are good bacteria so he fermented the additional harvest of maize and other greens. “Medyo nahirapan ako para sa alternative ng pre-starter feeds pero nag-base pa rin ako sa nutrient requirement nila”
, Lester emphasized.
Heavily influenced by the SPF course, Lester found the use of concoctions very helpful in the prevention of diseases and production of a carcass. The lactic acid bacteria serum (LABS) which was popularized by the ITCPH was very effective in keeping his animals healthy. Meanwhile, he uses the oriental herbal nutrient (OHN) in rare cases of sick pigs. The fermented fruit juice (FPJ) serves as a growth enhancer, while the fermented plant juice (FPJ) is being fed to finishers before market resulting in a marbling taste of meat.
In terms of meat quality, it is tender, juicy, and reddish in color. “Nung minsan napagkamalan nung sinusplayan ko sa Manila na beef yung binigay ko kasi yung kulay niya iba talaga sa pork, malapit na sa pagiging beef”
, says Lester.
In 2020, Lester managed to grow his grandpa’s business to a 200-sow level farm. With the pandemic in the spotlight, he pursued to participate in the online courses being offered by the Center. He was also able to establish a meat shop at their home. According to him, a minimum of two finishers are slaughtered and sold daily.
However, this successful newbie faced a big challenge this year when his farm got infected with African swine fever (ASF). Currently, (December 2021), he operates a 50-sow level farm through natural farming.
Due to learnings and insights from the effect of ASF, Lester plans to practice swine artificial insemination, through a tailor-made course from the ITCPH. Though prominent for their boar-for-hire service, Lester is confident that their farm to be known for AI too.
With free-range production of hogs, Lester maintains a high farm performance of 10-12 parities, with 12 piglets born alive, and low mortality percentage of 3%. In terms of carcass weight, in 5 to 6 month-time since birth, a market weight of 100kg is attained. Lester uses a specially mixed grower ration that does not contain any genetically modified organisms.
Encouraged by the results of free-ranging pigs, Lester is positive that his venture to natural pig farming can take him afar.
