Brainy Vren: Fulfilling the VetMed Practice in the Academe

“Pag animals lang lagi yung kaharap, parang kulang yung fulfillment ko sa ginagawa ko”
– Doc Vren.
Working the job of a university veterinarian for two years, Vren took the opportunity to be an affiliate instructor. The excitement of interacting with students brought this doctor into the teaching field, not to mention her coming from a family of educators.
Four years later, she became a full-time instructor at the University of Southern Mindanao, College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon entering the university as a teacher, she was tasked to deliver subjects in swine production.
Thirsty for more knowledge for her students, Doc Vren was clear that she needed to upgrade what she already knew. Apart from being a wide reader and skilled doctor, Vren followed the advice of colleagues to go to the ITCPH for a training. “Marami na sa mga kasamahan ko, nag-training na sa ITCPH, kaya sinubukan ko”
, shares Doc Vren.
Excited to see why many are making a fuss about the Center, Dr. Vrenelie Flores attended the swine artificial insemination course for trainers in 2014. True enough, the training center exceeded her expectations. As a result, she was able to establish an AI Center at the University. However, due to a change of administration, the project did not prosper.
The following year, Doc Vren once again went to the ITCPH for the National Trainer’s Course on Pig Husbandry. “Gusto ko talaga yung simple yet very detailed procedure dito”
, says Doc Vren.
As an extension coordinator now at the university, activities focused on swine were easier to translate for students and farmers, as an effect of her practical activities at the Center’s training farm.
Even holding several subjects in swine production before taking the NTCPH course, Doc Vren admitted that a lot of learnings was still gained. Specifically, the so-called feeding scheme, the temperature requirement according to the type of pens and buildings, the types of housing facility, farm-to-farm distance, and foot bath system were known.
Adding to her knowledge and skills in maintaining a farm, Doc Vren was able to improve their current collage syllabus and improve her style of teaching. Developing confidence and credibility in delivering topics related to swine, private companies invite her as their resource person. Catering to various types of audiences, easy-to-understand brochures were prepared, from the ITCPH module and practical classes.
With the current situation and limited face-to-face interaction with students, Doc Vren uploads actual demonstration of farm activities and makes sure that students understand farm administration in an online setting.
“Iba yung dating sa estudynate pag may background talaga sa tinuturo at masasabi ko na malayo ang narating ko sa ITCPH kasi lahat na-experience ko talaga”
, Doc Vren adds. The said course was participated for two months of intensive theoretical and hands-on classes.
According to Doc Vren, providing recommendations to farmers and students was made easier through the itcph way of training. “Even sa pag explain ng sa housing, madali mapicture ng estudyante kasi kaya ko iguhit kung ano yung sinasabi ko”
, she adds.
Doc Vren considers her passion for sharing knowledge a fulfillment of her career. “This has a big effect that I can impart these to future doctors”
, she explained.
This veterinarian, that was once a university vet, and made her way to the faculty, has been enjoying her career path as an associate professor and an extension coordinator.
Highlighting their extension works today is the ‘Livestock and Poultry Production Assistance for Development’ (LIPAD), which provides technical assistance to a community of 15 animal raisers. Instructors and students visit hog-raising communities and help smallhold farm owners improve their management practices, biosecurity, breeding, and prevent the occurrence of diseases.
During her first year upon attending the NTCPH, Doc Vren has earned a total of 30 points in extension services that helped her in her securing promotions.
Only this year, Doc Vren has also joined the Center’s online courses on swine production medicine course and feednovation. She is currently planning to experiment on fodder hydroponics using the university’s variety of white and yellow corn.
When speaking with farmers, Doc Vren usually disagrees with the thinking of pig farming referred to as a piggy bank. “It’s not a piggy bank, it’s a time deposit because it has interest and profit through time”
, she stresses.
Every time she is invited as a speaker, this Vet always emphasizes that no matter how small a farm may be, it should be sustainable and profitable.
Through continuous linkages and involvement she gets from being an instructor and extension coordinator, Doc Vren looks forward to learning not just by books, but with actual experiences with the different walks of life she encounters.
“Wala man lang ako na establish na project, I consider it a success seeing my students become professionals in this field”
, Doc Vren proudly shares.
Today, Doc Vren enjoys the fulfilling life of a vetmed practitioner while devoting her time both in the academe and extension works, in Kabakalan, North Cotobato.
