Balik Aral si Sir

“Mahirap naman magturo sa mga estudyante mo nang hindi ka gaanong ka-confident sa topic na ididiscuss mo at mismong ikaw sa sarili mo hindi mo pa naeexperience gawin.”
Mr. Emmanuel Q. Alejo, 35, is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Education Major in Agriculture. He has been a teacher at Balagtas National Agricultural Highschool for 10 years already. Amazing as he described for he has gone through a lot of challenges and struggles as an educator.
Mr. Alejo became an ITCPH alumnus in year 2016 in the National Trainors Course on Swine Artificial Insemination. He gladly recalled how he was able to attend the training at the Center. He said that he was very honored to be chosen as one of the representatives from their school. He believe that it happened not just by mere luck. He made sure to maximize his time learning at ITCPH and promised himself that as he goes back to his school, he is equipped with the knowledge and skills that would add up to his competencies as a teacher.
Considering the reality that only few students opt to choose courses in line with agriculture, the Balagtas National Agricultural High School is also one of the schools whose primary aim is to encourage increase in number of students in terms of signifying their interest at agriculture, and therefore took up agriculture-related courses in the mere future and have appreciation towards agricultural activities.
In connection to this arising concern, Mr. Alejo said that he wanted to improve his knowledge on agriculture, particularly in livestock for it is very relevant for him as a teacher to effectively teach his students. For him, it is very important for a teacher-trainor to have let himself practice what he is teaching.
“Mas madali magturo pag ikaw mismo alam mo yung hand-son nuon at alam mo yung iba pang nangyayari at pwedeng mangyari habang ginagawa ang isang bagay”
– says the determined teacher.
Apart from being a senior highschool teacher, Mr. Alejo also manages a backyard farm mainly for their family’s consumption. He owns several heads of pigs, ducks, and chicken. He also plants crops such as banana, cashew, sili, eggplant, sitaw and okra. He said that he also considers having this as another source of income. In fact, he also uses this let studnets witness and experience the actual farm activities. “Minsan nga po iniinvite ko yun mga estudyante ko na pumunta sa aking mini farm para talagang magkaroon sila ng idea at mas maappreciate nila yun tinuturo ko”
, he added.
More than what is expected, he now practices artificial insemination at his own backyard farm. The usual farm activities he never expected to perform became a routine. He ended up the conversation emphasizing that completing a course at ITCPH is a self-fulfilling deed as a teacher. In fact, he was then promoted from Teacher I to Teacher II in 2017.
“It was a highlight of my career growth but to be able to impart something you gained expertise on is priceless”
– ends the teacher.
