Start Small, Dream Big: A Noble Crusade

It doesn’t take much to see what dreams are made of, if you know where to look. On a grand scale, the ambition is more than obvious. But even meager beginnings come from great aspirations.
Pastor Vic is a dreamer, and not the usual kind. While most people seek wealth and recognition, he aspires to make a difference in people’s lives and the environment. Indeed, as a man of God he treasures His creations.
He lives simply and contentedly, but he’s driven by a vision. After starting out with an organic vegetable garden, he ventured out to integrate livestock. His quest led him to ATI-ITCPH, where he tried to find out if by any chance there’s a dispersal or paiwi of native pigs. There was none, but he got more than what he bargained for when its Center Director decided to simply lend him native pigs to start with. The deal was that his garden would be turned into a learning site.
More so, the timing was definitely perfect. Coincidentally, there was an upcoming training on Organic Agriculture for Livestock Technicians at the time; he then enrolled. Afterwards, he also attended trainings on Artificial Insemination and LABS, which further prepared him for his new endeavor.
Now, HOPE Organic Garden has become a thriving learning site not only for agriculture students but also those who share his vision. Moreover, he has been able to reach out with the number of his beneficiaries steadily growing. With his five sows, he was able to start an outreach program, through dispersal of native pigs mostly to 4Ps family members in Barangays San Isidro Itaas and Talaga in Lemery, Batangas.
Through further collaboration with ATI-ITCPH, HOPE was also able to give out parawakans to OSYs, and six (6) goats to identified families in San Isidro Itaas. And by means of this partnership, a sustained milk-feeding program was also conducted for wasted and severely wasted children in Talaga, as well as a (Bignay and Duhat) tree planting activity, which was aimed at providing a sustainable livelihood for residents in years ahead. After five (5) years, these seedlings are expected to be the main raw material for the community’s venture on wine industry.
Indeed it’s true that when you dream, you work on it. And when you dream, make it big.
This is what guides Pastor Vic on his quest to establish a greenhouse. Eventually, he was rewarded with the greenhouse he was praying for, which now houses mainly high-value vegetables: romaine lettuce, bok choy (chinese petchay), asparagus and broccoli, among others.
In HOPE Organic Garden, the use of Lactic Acid Bacteria Serum (LABS), a technology which Pastor Vic adopted and acquired through his training at the Center has become one of his site’s best practices. The stench is considerably reduced and the animals are relatively healthy, not to mention the plants. It was so helpful that he opted to share this technology through training with eight women in Barangay. Talaga—two of whom have already adopted the practice and are now formulating their own LABS.
Pastor Vic’s long and frequent visits to the ATI-ITCPH facility truly have been worth it, as he’s now taking one sure step after another towards his goals, marking significant accomplishments along the way. Even now he remains a simple man, while he’s unknowingly building a legacy, with the difference he’s been making, with everything he’s been able to share.
Yes, he may have started small but his dreams are relatively big. Where does his will really come from? The nobility of the cause, perhaps.
