Mentee to Mentor: Gio’s 4H Journey

“Nakita ko yung potential at opportunities na binibigay sa 4H, kaya kahit mahirap kumuha ng members, nag-pilit pa rin akong makabuo ng club kasi sure beneficiary sila ng DA”
– Gio, 19.
The 4H Club started many years ago and was adopted in the Philippines. The four “H” stands for head, heart, hands, and health that helps young people including the out-of-school youth to be proactive member of a community in agriculture.
Mr. Gio Earl Laguerta, an agri-advocate pushed for the creation of 4H in Barangay Baruyan, Calapan, Oriental Mindoro. “Nahirapan ako kasi dapat at least maka 15 members ako para makabuo ng grupo”
, Gio shares. According to him, the participation of youth in agri and livestock related activities is deemed low. But since Gio carries a strong personality and a friendly face in inviting the young, it eventually paved off as he became the 4H President in his barangay and city level.
“Naging taktika ko po yung pag nag-iinvite by group, para mas madali sila mapasali”
he adds. Currently, he leads almost 100 members in his barangay alone and around 400 in total covering the whole of Calapan.
Gio’s 4H journey started in 2019 and opened doors to more opportunities in agriculture, poultry, and livestock. In the same year, Gio enrolled in a five-week training at the Agricultural Training Institute – International Training Center on Pig Husbandry (ATI-ITCPH).
“Hindi naman na po bago sa mga magulang ko pag lagi akong nawawala ng matagal, kasi dati pa po akong kung saan-saan na-attend ng seminars”
, Gio explains when asked about how his parents support him.
“Meron na rin po akong naging training dati sa Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), two weeks po yun pero sa native pigs po. Ito pong sa ITCPH first time ko po na commercial pigs po”
Gio adds. During his stay at the Center, Gio had the chance to meet other 4H members from the different regions of the country and even made him prouder in his pursuit to promote agriculture.
The Practical Course on Pig Husbandry for Stockpersons is being offered to 4H members, exposing them to theoretical classes and practical activities inside the training farm. It gives an in-depth understanding of the core of pig raising from breeds and breeding up to finisher production tapping various computations on feeding, farm performance, and economics.
"Very helpful and grateful po ako not only sa knowledge, but skills at management na naitama ko po"
— Gio
Since then, Gio has improved on the management of gestating sows, feeding, injection techniques, piglet processing, housing, and judging the health condition of animals.
Besides owning a farrow-to-finish production, he also grows various crops and vegetables in his 700 sq.m G-Farm. Lately, he joined the nation’s way of helping the needy in establishing a community pantry in Mindoro, sourcing fresh farm produce from his co-4H club member.
Grateful for how his 4H journey turned out, Gio extends support to other pork producers in his area by providing free service in swine-related activities. “May mga farmers po kasi na close-minded, danas ko po yan sa palay farmers, kaya kahit wala po ako matanggap na bayad, basta po maka build lang po ako ng awareness na ito po ang tamang management pagdating sa mga alaga nating baboy”
Gio happily shares.
This young agripreneur now receives positive feedback from the elder farmers as their willingness to learn became higher.
Meanwhile, more 4H members are engaging in pig farming as he intensifies a livelihood program for them. Weaners are being distributed to members, after attending Gio’s training on-farm management. The tool kit provided by the ITCPH also became handy as he roams around the community to give technical assistance. His exposure to extension service contributed for him to be an active speaker in various trainings and programs at ATI-Mimaropa for youth engagement in agriculture.
This year, Gio will be joining the Filipino Young Farmers Internship Program in Taiwan for 11 months. His dedication to pigs showed as he chose swine as a priority during the internship, followed by poultry and mushroom. After the internship, Gio plans to renovate his pig housing facility which is four decades old already, through a start-up capital from Taiwan.
According to Gio, youth involvement is crucial, but timely, since the Department of Agriculture continuous its support to the youth. “Be part of the agricultural sector, be a local farmer and producer”
, ends Gio.
Gio’s 4H journey – inspiring the youth, encouraging the elderly.
