Knowledge and Passion for Swine: Gladys’ Daily Routine

A part-time teacher finds her way in the government service upon earning years of service in a private agriculture school.
“Nagsimula akong JO sa serbisyo pero napagkatiwalaan naman akong makapag-aral sa isang international agency, at yun yung naging simula para mas makilala ko ang sarili ko”
– Gladys.
Before attending trainings at the International Training Center on Pig Husbandry, Gladys has already on-hand experiences and actual encounter to hogs. Overall, her skills were improved in farm management and artificial insemination.
Currently employed under the research division of the Department of Drug administration through oral suspension. Ms. Gladys’ performing swine AI. Agriculture Region IX, Ms. Gladys Marie D. Caray grabs every opportunity to further develop her expertise in swine and poultry. So when her immediate supervisor recommended the ITCPH for specialized trainings in pig production, Gladys did not hesitate to travel to South Luzon.
“Parang school talaga ang ITCPH, talagang
skilled ang mga estudyante pag lumabas”
, says Gladys when asked about her stay in Lipa, Batangas.
Starting her admiration for this was the National Trainer’s Course on Pig Husbandry in 2016. Learning pig production and extension for more than two months at ITCPH prepared Gladys on the expectations from her line of work. Assigned in a 30-sow level farm, 60% of her time is devoted to research whereas the remaining 40% goes to farm and field activities. A good balance to keep her shape, and mind sharp.
Excited to apply her new learnings, she managed to have their swine housing facility renovated under the National Livestock Program. Her proposal amounting to P300,000 was approved and put into action.
Meanwhile, as an alumnus of the NTCPH, she was given a chance to be an assistant to the assessor during evaluation under the TESDA program. Soon she was also designated as an evaluator to swine project proposal in her office.
“Yung actual, maalam talaga ako, pero yung technicality, yun yung
kulang”,
Gladys shares. Since her supervisor believed in her capability to deliver what is expected from her, she was given the chance to be trained the itcph way.
So the same year, she took the National Trainer’s Course on Artificial Insemination and paved the way to be more passionate about pig production.
Being in-charge of their AI laboratory, Gladys initiated a renovation for it and procured a microscope with a screen monitor to check the quality of semen. The same year (2019), her proposal for additional equipment was also approved and enabled the latest technology on pregnancy diagnosis be available through a scanner and doppler.
According to Gladys, their AI laboratory remains to be the only AI center in the whole region. From the usual purpose of supplying fresh boar semen for their farm, it also became an income generating project (IGP) of the agency. In a week, around 50 doses of processed boar semen are being sold to local pig farmers in Zamboanga Peninsula.
Aside from working on various researches and trials, Gladys serves as the boar trainer, semen collector, evaluator and processor. She enjoys her mornings with a largewhite and white duroc to keep the AI laboratory in function.
Acting as a resource person to related topics in swine also keeps Gladys in a hectic schedule. Trainings are also conducted for AI technicians, students, and walk-ins, as she is never greedy to share her learnings and skills from the ITCPH.
“Personally dahil sa trainings na ito, mas naging relatable sa mga ginagawa kong research, hindi lang sa production, pero yung sa hayop mismo”
, adds Gladys. Equipped with deeper understanding in the hows and whys in swine helped her to be a confident extension worker. “Alam ko lahat ng sinasabe ko pag nagtuturo kasi base lahat sa aktwal kong karanasan hindi puro basa” she emphasized.
After attending trainings at the Center, she was given a permanent position in the government.
“Napaka overwhelming nung mga course, at sinubukan ko talaga lahat ng natutunan ko duon, para maiaapply ko kagad at maitruo sa iba”
she ends.
Heavily involved in research and farm activities, Gladys continues to inspire more women in agriculture.
