From Zero to Hero | A Mission to Capacitate Farmers

“Zero knowledge ako sa pag-aalaga, lalo na sa mga hybrids, mga puti. Kasi wala talaga idea niyan… Nung umattend-attend ako ng mga training na yan [ATI-ITCPH], masasabi ko na ngayon na medyo maalam na, marunong na.”
Starting with 16 members, Mr. Lynil Torres is one of the pioneer members of the Silang Livestock Agriculture Cooperative (SLAC), Silang Cavite. Consisting of 45 members, he currently serves as the chairman of the SLAC. Thirty (30) of them are Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBA) members.
Mr. Torres learned about ATI-ITCPH through its webinar series. With minimal knowledge of pig husbandry, he participated in one webinar event in 2022, which is the “Bakit nga ba Native?”. With so much eagerness to learn various aspects of pig husbandry, especially in producing commercial hogs, he attended numerous face-to-face trainings in ATI-ITCPH. These include Pork to Pork Multiplying Business Opportunities (2022), National Trainers’ Course on Pig Husbandry (2022), National Trainers’ Course on Swine Artificial Insemination (2022), National Trainers’ Course on Meat Processing (2022), Short Course ng Sustainable Pig Farming (2022), National Trainers’ Course ng Animal Waste Management and Utilization (2022), National Trainers’ Course Pig Farming as an Enterprise (2023), Course on Meat Processing Utilizing Local and Natural Methods and Preservation (2023), and Training on Trainers on Animal Feed Milling Technology for Smallhold Farmers (2023). Mr. Torres added that some of the members of SLAC are attending the Center’s training too.
SLAC is one of the beneficiaries of the DA-NLP INSPIRE Program, particularly the 30-Sow Level Multiplier & Techno-Demo Farm, and the Climate-Controlled Finisher Operation Facility. Mr. Torres took the opportunity to develop re-entry plans applicable to the multiplier and finisher operation farms. These re-entry plans are part of the ATI-ITCPH training requirement, following the Center’s learning-by-doing training principle, he greatly applied honed skills and learning.
“Ang purpose ko talaga nung pag-attend ng training, matuto muna at saka magbahagi naman. Lalo na sa mga member namin. Ako rin ang nakatoka na mag-training doon sa mga beneficiary namin.”
As a farmer-leader, Mr. Torres lives by the mission of capacity building, particularly to members of the community where he belongs. He offers hands-on demonstrations on various aspects of pig husbandry, a farrowto- finish approach. It includes sow management, feeding, insemination, and more.
“Itinuturo ko sa kanila actual. Sabi nga dito sa ITCPH, learning by doing. Kailangan talaga actual. Para natatandaaan ng mga member namin yung pagtuturo… Kumpleto po ang ITCPH, lalo na yung trainers’ course na yan.”
Mr. Torres regards the Center’s follow-through initiatives. He admires how its technical staff extended their support throughout the project.
“Yong stock projection, yung totoo niyan, si Mam Amy [tumulong]. Parang one-on-one kami noon, doon mismo sa ITCPH pumunta ako doon… Kasi mahirap siyang gawin sa totoo lang.”
Guided by the Center’s thrusts in capacity enhancement, Mr. Torres is grateful that he serves the ITCPHway; that is, assisting farmers towards the improvement of the methods of swine production and marketing. It becomes an integral part of achieving a balanced social and economic development, particularly in rural areas.
