From Rice Fields to Pig Farms: Building Expertise on Pig Pens and Biogas Digesters

“Nagkaroon ako ng ideya na gayahin yung kapwa magsasaka ko na nagbebenta ng baboy, at ang kanyang pinagbilhan ay ginagamit naman sa palayan”
- Tatay Manny.
This marked Mr. Manuel Pasa Jr.'s early beginnings in pig farming. However, growing hogs did not seem an easy route for him, as good results were not seen. With a lack of understanding and knowledge in swine production, Tay Manny pursued trainings and seminars related to pig production. This led to keeping a farrow-to-finish production from 1986 to 2010.
Raised in the Bicol region, rice planting was seen to be the main source of income for many farmers. In terms of pig production, large white and landrace breeds are commonly used in producing finishers whereas housing facilities are usually built the traditional way.
After high school, Tay Manny took short courses on electronics and industrial technology through earning from farming. For more than 30 years, he has gained technical knowledge and skills through his work experiences in different farms, (crops, poultry, cattle, swine) in his region.
Apparently, during one of Farmer’s Lakbay Aral or expository trips, Tay Manny became interested to taking-up courses at the ITCPH. It was in 1998 when he first joined a Farmer’s Leader’s Course at the Center. “Wala talaga akong kaalam-alam sa pagbababuyan noong sumubok ako mag-alaga ng baboy kasi nawili lang ako sa aking kasamahan na may extrang kita sa pagbebenta ng baboy”
, he shares. According to Tay Manny, proper training is a must for someone to be successful in pig production.
After a long time, Tay Manny pursued pig farming and took several courses in 2018, and more the next year. Familiar with many farming practices already, he made sure to have the same know-how in swine production through participating in three National Trainer's Courses on Pig Husbandry, Climate-Smart Farm Business School (Livestock), and on Animal Waste Management and Utilization.
Tay Manny, just like the staff, wears a smile every time you see him. You can see that he enjoys his learning experience at the Center. During his free time, he is fond of sketching pig housing designs and farm plans. Conversing with animal keepers and technical trainers made him more enthusiastic about how broad and scientific growing pigs can be. Of course, he also manages to spend some time reading technical books at the ITCPH library.
“Maganda sa ITCPH kasi kumpleto ung technical na kaalaman, at the same time, lahat ng gamit, practical activities, and field trips na related sa kurso, andun na”
, Tay Manny emphasized.
After participating to the mentioned courses, Tay Manny started to practice drafting pig housing designs, and preparing plans on building biogas digesters. “Dito ko nakita na kahit gaano kaganda o sementado yang pabahay sa pagbabuyan, kung mali naman ang pagkagawa, wala rin”
, he narrates.
Proper housing facilities result in a higher level of production, while suitable waste management disposal and biogas digesters make an eco-friendly environment.
Meanwhile, in the execution of plans, Tay Manny encountered several challenges particularly in the location of the farm, and workers who do the physical work. According to him, setting-up biogas digesters is more tedious than designing pig pens.
Currently, he is in charge of developing a plan for an 80-sow level farm and the establishment of a biogas digester for a 50-sow level farm in Camarines Sur.
As a farm consultant to several areas within the region, he shares his acquired knowledge and skills both to smallhold, commercial farms, and private companies. “Yung ibang magbababoy, nasa bundok na talaga, remote areas, pero worth-it naman ang pagod kapag nakikita mon a Malaki yung naitutulong mo sa kanila”
adds Tay Manny.
This experienced farmer-teacher is currently a farm manager in a piggery farm and learning site for agriculture. Also, an administrator in a farm that focuses on free-range chicken and cattle production. Aside from being an all-around farmer in livestock and poultry, he advocates the use of manure as fertilizer.
If he is to advise persons who would want to put up a piggery, he recommends starting it right. Meaning, proper housing facilities, and waste disposal should be in place, to produce high-performing and quality animals.
Through continuous application and overcoming problems in this type of specialization, Tay Manny builds his expertise and confidence in pig housing designs and biogas digesters, while providing extension services to individual and organized farmers in the remote areas of Camarines Sur.
