Victorious Vic: The Success Story of Marivic Capalad

“It was a stroke of luck when I took ITCPH training.”
Marivic “Vic” A. Capalad, 44 years old, works as an instructor of Bulacan Agricultural State College (BASC). She is the adviser of the Animal Science Club. She teaches Swine Production, Slaughtering of Farm Animals and Meat Processing.
In 2017, she attended the National Trainers’ Course on Pig Husbandry. It is the flagship training program the Center offers. It equips the participants with technical know-how in various disciplines of swineraising. She was part of the 21st Batch, called as Ha-Pigs.
“Sabi ng mga staff ng ITCPH, kapag nakapag-training ka dito, babalik at
babalik ka pa din. Naisip ko, bakit ako babalik, kalayo-layo”.
After NTCPH, Ms. Capalad also took the National Trainer’s Course on Swine Artificial Insemination and Meat Processing: Utilizing Local and Natural Methods of Preservation.
"Totoo nga pala, maadik ka sa ITCPH, hindi ka
makokontento sa isang training lang."
Learning by Doing ang main [ingredient] na meron ang ITCPH, kaya marami ka talagang matutunan.
With such exposure, BASC became one of the recipients of the “Nucleus and Multiplier Breeder Farms for Poultry, Swine and Small Ruminants Project” of the Stimulus Package for Agriculture Bayanihan Act II of the National Livestock Program (NLP). The project is worth five million pesos, which includes the 30-sow Level farm with two boars. She was designated as the Project Leader of the Multiplier and Techno-Demo Farm and applied the knowledge and skills she gained. It may be an additional responsibility, but she was happy of learning pig husbandry principles and practices from the Center.
"Kaya ako’y nagpapasalamat ng marami sa ATIITCPH
at kay Doc Ruth."
As the Project Leader, Ms. Capalad was responsible for planning and directing all production phases on the farm, communicating with veterinarians to ensure herd health to complying with all bio-security protocols. From ordering feeds, supplies, and equipment to assisting with the breeding of sows, gestation, and farrowing of pigs.
In terms of biosecurity, she imposed a strict protocol. Animal caretakers are living within the perimeter of the building. Guests and visitors will take a 24-hour downtime before entering the building.
Currently, she is drafting a proposal for the Swine Artificial Insemination sa Barangay (SWAIB) Project. This project is also under the National Livestock Program- Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE).
"Ako ay umaasa na sa pakikipagtulungan ng
DA-NLP, ATI-ITCPH at BASC ay maisakatuparan
na maibalik ang swine raising dito sa Bulacan
lalo’t higit dito sa San Ildefonso. Maraming
windows at doors ang nag-open sa akin after
ko magtraining sa ITCPH. Nakakaadik nga
pala talaga."
Vic remains on her mission of contributing to the country’s effort on the recovery and expansion of the Philippine swine industry. This is the #ITCPHway
of helping the industry become globally competitive, not just through learning-by-doing, but also learning from each other.
