It is Better Late, Than Never

Going into any kind of business without any know-how is considered a big risk. However, if given appropriate action, one can immediately improve and stabilize the operation.
The journey of Mr. Noel Dagoy proves that learning is an integral part of preparing the sustainability of a business. Noel is a middle-age Cebuano who started a pig enterprise from the market’s demand in Valencia, Negros Oriental.
In 2018, Meltina Farm was established with only a few heads of growers. Upon running a finisher production, he admitted that their basic knowledge is not enough to run a piggery. Aside from encountering difficulties, and day-to-day challenges on farm and finisher management, financial constraints were faced too due to major cost on feeds and mortality.
“At dun ko na nakilala ang ITCPH, kasi naisip ko na talagang kailangan ko mag step-up para sa negosyo ng pagbababuyan, dahil marami pa kong kailangan matutunan”
, shares Noel.
Sure of making the farm be another source of income, Noel decided to undergo a formal training in pig husbandry. Searching the web, the International Training Center on Pig Husbandry was found. His first course participation in 2019 helped him in producing quality market hogs.
“Yung Basic Course on Pig Husbandry maganda kasi mapipilitan kang mag-isip kung paano mo i-aapply yung mga natutunan mo using their template sa re-entry plan”
, he added. Just like the other course offerings of the Center, participants are expected to present a proposal on starting or expanding a pig production.
Acquiring technical know-how and skills in raising pigs were beyond Noel’s expectations. The Center’s complete facilities and pool of experts built his confidence and prepared him to being a proud businessman. His exposure to classroom discussions and practical activities at the training farm eventually led him on buying superior breeders too.
Learning that the housing facility highly contributes to the performance of animals, Noel heavily invested on improving the pig pens. Currently, a 30-sow level farm is being maintained even at the height of CoViD-19 and African Swine Fever outbreak.
Noel has attended several trainings at ITCPH. The subject economics was also appreciated. According to his technical calculations, in two-years time, the investment has already been returned, making the establishment of another business possible.
The modern pork producer engaged into value-adding activity. The “Meltina Meatshop” in Barangay Banilad, Dumaguete City supplies pork within the nearby towns and cities of Negros Oriental. An average of two to three live animals are butchered daily making around 150-200 kilograms of fresh meat available to consumers. This undertaking has also created employment and benefitted a total of six workers.
He happily shares that everything he learned were applied in the actual farm operation, resulting to a positive impact not only in sales but to the quality of animals and meat they are able to produce. Noel even enumerated all the aspects of pig husbandry which he deemed to be very useful in his pig farm.
Housing. Because of the training I was able to know the required measurements, spacing, and ventilation system for animals to live comfortably.
Waste Management. Managing animal wastes through a septic tank was very helpful in the protection of the environment and maintaining good relations to the neighborhood. Dry cleaning is also practiced, and hopes to have a biogas digester installed in the future.
Artificial Insemination. Since we shifted from finisher production to sow-to-finish operation, artificial insemination secured the safety of the farm particularly in the transmission of diseases through direct contact. AI is being managed through both collect and serve process and the use of extended boar semen.
Breeding selection. The basic knowledge on breeding selection is very important in meeting the farm targets through high litter index and number of piglets reared per year.
“Kaya kung tatanungin ako, napakalaki talaga ng naitulong ng ITCPH lalo na yun mismong training nila ng Basic Course on Pig Husbandry sa aking farm”
, Noel adds.
Besides the success of Noel, the Center is more privileged to have molded private individuals (like him) believe in the earning capacity of a pig enterprise.
