ALEXANDER: The Great AI Technician

“There is nothing impossible to him who will try”
– Alexander the Great.
This quote from a King of an ancient Greek kingdom perfectly suits Alex of Mambusao, Capiz. Alex depicts the story of a man who did not give-up on delivering his potentials on livestock and agriculture.
Alex in his 30's encounters challenges in finding a job due to his physical condition. As a holder of a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, he was able to fin experience in the Municipal Agriculture Office. But because he lacks eligibility, he turned to ought for another employment which eventually did not work.
“Nung wala akong mapasukang trabaho, dun ako nagsimula magkaroon ng sarili kong baboy”
shares Alex. Growing pigs is not a new thing for him. It’s his family’s main source of income and the one who sent them to school.
As a boar handler, Alex manages to serve clients by foot. Lacking proper animal transportation, he luckily bumped into an extension worker. He was encouraged to attend a program on swine artificial insemination from the Agricultural Training Institute in Region VI.
Alex managed to go with other nine pig recipients of the “AI sa Barangay” at the International Training Center on Pig Husbandry in Lipa City, Batangas. It is a project of the ATI-RTC VI and ITCPH in support of the National Livestock Program (NLP) of the Department of Agriculture.
From the traditional way of breeding, Alex shifted to swine artificial insemination. After his training at ITCPH, he was provided two superior boars and AI equipment through RTC VI.
Because of this, it is more convenient not only for Alex but helps the boar eliminate stress and possible injuries during travel. When asked how he was able to promote AI, he narrates – "Noong una ay nahirapan ako na maibahagi sa kanila ito, ngunit noong makita nila na mas maayos ang resulta pag AI ay kusa na silang nalapit sa akin".
Due to positive feedback from clients, Alex was very happy to manage an AI Center that supported his family. One can ultimately grow a business through artificial insemination since boar semen is processed and is being converted into a higher number of doses, increasing the number of sows bred. Risks of transferring infection and diseases in different farms are also avoided.
From serving three sows through natural breeding, an average of 20 sows is being served through AI weekly. His AI Center is located at Barangay Calaagus, Mambusao, Capiz.
Alexander Llamas finally found a career to develop. Aside from being an AI technician, he also serves as a Resource Person in seminars and training on swine artificial insemination.
While busy growing his business, Alex grows self-confidence and makes friends.
“Isang makabuluhan at makabagong kaalaman ang aking natutunan sa ITCPH at ito ang nagbigay pag-asa at magandang kabuhayan sa aking pamilya”
Alex narrates.
Truly there is nothing impossible for someone who tries.
